Six signs your switchboard is overdue
Any one of these on its own is worth a look. Two or more, and a switchboard upgrade should move to the top of your list.
Ceramic or rewireable fuses
Porcelain fuse holders with fuse wire inside date the board to well before safety switches existed. They protect the wiring from overload. They do nothing to protect people.
No safety switches
Open the board and look for switches with a test button marked T. No test buttons means no safety switches, which means nothing stands between a fault and a fatal shock.
Regular tripping or blown fuses
A breaker that trips every time the heater and kettle run together is the board telling you it is overloaded. Resetting it again and again is not a fix, it is a countdown.
Flickering or dimming lights
Lights that dip when a big appliance kicks in point to loose connections or circuits running at their limit. Both start at the switchboard, and both get worse, not better.
Adding an EV charger, battery or induction
EV chargers, home batteries and induction cooktops all need dedicated circuits and modern protection. An old board simply has nowhere safe to put them.
Heat marks, buzzing or a hot plastic smell
Scorch marks around fuses, a buzzing hum, or that unmistakable hot electrical smell mean connections are cooking. Stop resetting and call us. This one is urgent.

What moves the number:
- How many circuits the board carries: a two bedroom unit is a smaller job than a five bedroom house
- Asbestos backing panels, common on older boards, which need careful removal and disposal

Why it matters
Safety switches cut power in milliseconds. That is the whole point.
A safety switch watches the current flowing out and back on a circuit. The instant some of it leaks to earth, through a damaged cable, a faulty appliance, or a person, it cuts the power in milliseconds. That is faster than a shock can take hold, which is exactly why safety switches save lives.
An old ceramic fuse cannot do that. Fuse wire melts when a circuit is overloaded, which protects the cable in the wall. It does not trip when electricity flows through a child who has poked something into a socket. That is the gap a switchboard upgrade closes.
Our rule on every upgrade is simple: a safety switch on every circuit, no exceptions. Not just the power points, but the lights, the oven, the air conditioning and the pool pump, because faults do not check which circuit they are on first.

How long does a switchboard upgrade take? +
Most upgrades are done in a single day. Power is off for part of that day while we work, and we plan the outage window with you in advance. Every circuit is tested and back on before we leave, and you receive your Certificate of Electrical Safety on completion.
Do I really need safety switches on every circuit? +
Yes. Under the wiring rules, new circuits must have safety switch protection, and older homes are only exempt until the board is touched. More to the point, a safety switch cuts power in milliseconds when current leaks to earth, which is what stops a shock from becoming a fatality. Protecting only the power points leaves the lights, oven and air conditioning as open gaps. We close all of them.
Can you do the switchboard and my EV charger or battery in one visit? +
Often, yes, and it is usually cheaper that way because the board is already open. We size the new board with your EV charger or battery in mind, run the dedicated circuits while we are there, and certify the lot together.
