New circuits that give big appliances their own power
An oven, spa, air conditioner or EV charger should never share a circuit with the kettle. DIM Electrical runs dedicated circuits from the switchboard, sized with a proper load calculation and signed off with a certificate of electrical safety.
When you need one
Appliances that need their own dedicated circuit
A standard Australian power circuit is protected at 16 or 20 amps and shared by every power point on it. Anything that pulls serious current for long stretches needs its own run back to the board. If you are pricing a dedicated circuit for an oven or spa in Melbourne, this is the list we install most.
Ovens and induction cooktops
A wall oven typically wants a dedicated 20 amp circuit, and many induction cooktops need 32 amps on their own run. Plugging either into a shared kitchen circuit is how breakers trip mid roast.
Spas and pool equipment
Spa heaters and pool pumps run for hours and sit outdoors near water. They need a dedicated, RCD protected circuit with weatherproof isolation at the unit. Non negotiable, and we install it properly.
Air conditioners
Split systems above about 2 kW of input draw belong on their own circuit, and ducted systems always do. The compressor start up current alone can knock out a shared circuit on a hot day.
Sheds, garages and studios
A backyard shed, garage workshop or home studio gets its own sub main and small sub board, usually run in underground conduit. Lights, power points and room to add more later.
EV chargers
A 7 kW home charger draws around 32 amps continuously, sometimes for eight hours straight. That is a dedicated circuit by definition. We run it as part of every EV charger installation.
Home battery systems
Batteries and hybrid inverters need dedicated protection at the board to comply with AS/NZS 5139. If a battery is on your roadmap, we run the circuit with that standard in mind from day one.

How to tell a circuit is overloaded
Circuits rarely fail without warning. Melbourne homes built before the 1990s were wired for a fraction of what we plug in today, and the symptoms below are the circuit telling you it is at its limit.
- The breaker trips when two appliances run together, like the kettle and the toaster
- Lights dim or flicker when the aircon, oven or dryer starts up
- Power points or plugs feel warm to the touch
- Buzzing or crackling sounds from the switchboard
- Half the house runs off power boards and double adaptors
- Ceramic fuses that keep blowing on an older board
Warm fittings and repeated tripping are fire risks, not quirks. A new dedicated circuit takes the load off, and if the board itself is the problem we fix that too: see switchboard upgrades. If something has already gone dead, start with fault finding.
What is involved
How we install a new circuit, start to finish
A new circuit is not just cable and a breaker. Done properly, it is a calculation, a board check, a tidy run and a certificate. Most single circuit jobs are finished the same day.
Load calculation
We check what the new appliance actually draws, what your existing circuits already carry, and confirm your supply can take the extra load before anyone touches a tool.
Board capacity check
The circuit needs a spare pole and its own RCBO protection at the switchboard. If your board is full or still on ceramic fuses, we tell you upfront and quote the upgrade honestly.
The cable run
Cable sized for the load and the distance, so there is no voltage drop at the far end. Through the roof, down walls, or in underground conduit for sheds. Neat, clipped and concealed.
Test, label and certify
Every circuit is tested, the board is labelled so the next sparky knows exactly what feeds what, and you get a certificate of electrical safety for your records and insurance.

Garage and shed wiring done properly
An extension lead out the laundry window is not shed power. DIM handles garage and shed wiring across South East Melbourne with a proper sub main from your switchboard, run in underground conduit, feeding a small sub board in the outbuilding with its own safety switches.
A typical shed, garage or studio fit out includes:
- A sub main sized for what the space will actually run, welder and compressor included
- A compact sub board with RCD protection, so a fault in the shed never darkens the house
- LED lighting and double power points where you work, not where the old ones happened to be
- Extra capacity left in the conduit and board for an EV charger or more circuits later
