Fault finding and repair
Electrical fault finding in South East Melbourne
Safety switch keeps tripping? Half the house suddenly dead? We find electrical faults the systematic way, with proper test gear, then fix and certify the repair. One licensed A-Grade electrician handles it from first call to final test, across Melbourne's south east.
Sound familiar?
The five fault symptoms we get called about most
If any of these is happening in your home, something in the installation is telling you it needs attention. Some are an annoyance. A couple are genuinely dangerous. All of them are findable.
Safety switch keeps tripping
The RCD flicks off when the kettle and heater run together, or trips at random overnight. It is doing its job: somewhere, current is leaking to earth. We find the circuit, then the exact appliance, cable or fitting causing it.
Half the house is dead
The lights work but the power points do not, or one whole side of the home has gone dark while the rest hums along. Usually a failed circuit, a broken neutral or a tired connection. We isolate it and trace it.
Burning smell from a point or the board
A hot plastic or fishy smell near a power point, switch or the switchboard means a connection is overheating. This one is urgent. Turn the circuit off at the board and call us before it becomes a fire.
Buzzing or crackling sounds
A switchboard, dimmer or power point should be silent. Buzzing usually means arcing: electricity jumping a gap it should not. Arcing chews through terminals and is a common fire starter in older boards.
Flickering or dimming lights
Lights that dip when the oven or air conditioner starts, or flicker in one room only. Could be a loose neutral, an overloaded circuit or a failing connection in the ceiling. We test rather than guess.
Something else odd?
Tingles from taps, warm switch plates, a burning light fitting, sockets that stopped working years ago. If it feels wrong, it usually is. Describe it over the phone and we will tell you how urgent it is.
Our process
How we find a fault without tearing your house apart
Fault finding is a method, not luck. A random sparkie swapping parts until something works costs you hours of labour. A systematic process gets to the cause fast, and fixes it once.
Listen, then isolate
You tell us when it happens and what changed recently. Then we split the installation circuit by circuit at the switchboard, halving the search area with every test until the fault has nowhere left to hide.
Test with proper gear
Insulation resistance tester, clamp meter and thermal imaging, not a licked finger and a hunch. Hot joints, leaking cables and failing terminations show up on instruments long before they show up as smoke.
Fix, retest and certify
You approve a fixed price before we repair. Then we fix the actual cause, retest the whole circuit under load, and certify the work as required, so the fault stays fixed instead of coming back next winter.
Fast local response
Live faults go to the top of the list
A house with no power, a burning smell or a safety switch that will not reset is not a "next Tuesday" job. DIM is based in Bentleigh, so Caulfield, Brighton, Moorabbin and the rest of the south east are a short drive, not a cross town trek.
Call and we triage on the phone: what tripped, what still works, whether it is safe to leave on. If it is urgent we tell you straight what we can do today, and what to switch off in the meantime. You speak directly to the electrician who turns up to do the work.
- Phone triage first, so you know where you stand in minutes
- Burning smell or sparking? Turn off the main switch and call us straight away
- We arrive with test gear and common repair parts on board, so most faults are found and fixed in one visit
The honest advice promise
If it is a $5 part, we say it is a $5 part
Plenty of "faults" turn out to be a dying kettle tripping the safety switch, one failed LED driver, or a lead the dog chewed behind the couch. When that is the answer, that is the answer you get. We are not going to dress a $5 fix up as a rewire.
And when the fault genuinely points to a bigger problem, like a fuse board full of arcing ceramic fuses, we show you the evidence: test readings and photos from your own switchboard, plus a written fixed price. You decide with the facts in front of you, not under pressure in the hallway.
- Plain language diagnosis: what failed, why, and what happens if you leave it
- Fixed price for the repair before we start, no surprise extras on the invoice
- If the cheap fix is the right fix, we tell you so
- If it is the appliance and not your wiring, you will know before you replace either

Where fault finding often leads
Finding the fault is step one. If the repair calls for more than a like for like fix, the same team handles that too, on the same licence and the same standards.
Switchboard upgrades
Many recurring faults trace back to an old fuse board with no safety switches. A modern board protects every circuit and ends the guesswork.
