The maths

Why a hardwired charger beats the powerpoint

Every EV ships with a portable lead you can plug into a normal socket. It works, but it is the slowest legal way to charge a car in Melbourne. The numbers tell the story.

Standard powerpoint: about 10 km per hour

A 10 amp socket adds roughly 10 km of range for every hour plugged in. Come home near empty in a 60 kWh EV and you are looking at more than a full day to charge. And that socket was never designed to run flat out for eight hours straight, night after night, especially on an older circuit shared with half the garage.

Hardwired 7 kW wallbox: roughly 40 km per hour

A 7 kW charger adds roughly 40 km of range every hour, so a typical day of driving is replaced in under an hour and most cars go from low to full overnight. It runs on its own dedicated circuit with its own protection, sized for the load, so nothing else in the house even notices.

Honest note: if you only drive 15 km a day and park next to a good socket, the portable lead might genuinely be enough for now. We will tell you that on the phone rather than sell you a wallbox you do not need. For everyone else, hardwired is the proper long term setup.

Smart charging

Charge off your solar, or off peak. Not at peak prices.

The charger is only half the win. The other half is when it charges. Set up properly, your car becomes the cheapest vehicle you have ever run.

Solar tracking

A solar aware charger watches what your panels are exporting and feeds it into the car instead of selling it to the grid for cents. On a sunny Melbourne day, that is close to free driving.

Off peak schedules

No solar, or charging in winter? Schedule the charger for overnight off peak or a dedicated EV tariff. Plug in when you get home, and the charger waits for the cheap window on its own.

Plays well with a battery

Already have, or planning, a home battery and solar system? We set the charger up so the car and the house do not fight over the same stored energy.

The install

What an EV charger installation involves

Most home EV charger installs across South East Melbourne are done and certified in a single visit. Here is exactly what happens.

1

Switchboard and supply check

We check your switchboard has the capacity and protection for a 7 kW load, and whether your home is single or three phase. Older boards with ceramic fuses need upgrading first, and we quote that honestly rather than bolting a charger onto a board that cannot take it.

2

Dedicated circuit and cable run

The charger gets its own circuit from the board with its own safety switch, never shared with the garage lights or the fridge. We run the cable neatly to where your car actually parks, whether that is a garage wall, a carport post or the front of the house.

3

Mount, commission, certify

We mount the wallbox, connect it, set up the app, schedules and solar tracking, then test a full charge session with your car before we leave. You get a certificate of electrical safety for the work, as required in Victoria.

Most installs completed same day, tested with your car

Pricing

What a home EV charger costs in Melbourne

Typical installs run from $1,200 to $2,500 including the dedicated circuit. The spread comes down to a few practical things we confirm before quoting:

  • How far the cable has to run from your switchboard to where the car parks
  • Whether your home is single phase or three phase
  • The condition of your switchboard, and whether it needs work first
  • Whether we supply the charger or you already have one

We are charger brand agnostic. Bought a wallbox with the car, or been given one? We will install and commission it. Want us to supply one? We recommend the unit that fits your car, your solar and your budget, not whichever brand pays the best margin.

Questions

EV charger questions, answered straight

Can I just keep charging from a normal powerpoint? +

You can, and for very light driving it may be enough. But at about 10 km of range per hour it is slow, and an ordinary socket running at full load all night is not what that circuit was designed for. A hardwired charger on its own dedicated circuit charges roughly four times faster and is the safer long term setup.

Do I need three phase power for a home EV charger? +

No. A single phase 7 kW charger fully recharges most EVs overnight, and that covers the vast majority of drivers. If your home already has three phase, some chargers can run faster where the car supports it. We confirm your supply during the switchboard check and quote both options if it is worth it.

How long does the installation take? +

Most home EV charger installs are completed in half a day to a day, including the dedicated circuit, cable run, commissioning and a test charge with your car. Long cable runs or a switchboard upgrade on the same visit can add time, and we confirm the timeline in your quote.

Ready to charge at home, overnight, on cheap power?

Tell us where the car parks and where your switchboard is, and we will come back with a fixed price. No obligation, and honest advice if a charger is not the right move yet.
